If you prefer oatmeal for breakfast, you can make it a special treat on the weekend: a casserole. Cut oats are mixed with walnuts, coconut, apple slices, and fried bacon, then baked in the oven. The finished casserole is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and filled with sweet and savory flavors. Serve it warm and soft, or let it set and cut into neat squares.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 tbsp. chopped oats
  • 0.5 cups chopped toasted walnuts
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes, toasted
  • 0.5 tsp coarse salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 0.5 cups tightly packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup diced apple (about 1 medium apple)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fried bacon (preferably smoked)

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C.
  2. Combine the oats, walnuts, coconut, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg, then add the milk, brown sugar, and olive oil. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, distributing them evenly.

  3. Add the apple and bacon and stir to distribute evenly. Pour the oat mixture into a 20x20 cm baking dish.
  4. Cover loosely with foil and bake on the middle rack of the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 30 minutes. Serve the casserole hot, divided into plates, or let it cool completely to room temperature and cut into squares.
