The main ingredient in these sandwiches is seitan, a wheat protein (gluten) product. It's prepared in such a way that you'll forget it's just a meat substitute! Slices of seitan are coated in a cola-based batter and fried in oil, creating a delicious crust and an incredibly rich flavor with a hint of sweetness. Fried seitan pairs perfectly with tomato sauce and mozzarella. Even meat-eaters will love these vegetarian sandwiches.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Heat olive oil in a heavy medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and black pepper. Cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes.

Add tomatoes and simmer until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 175°C.

  3. Cut the seitan into 1 cm thick slices. Mix flour, 1 tsp. salt, 0.5 tsp. black pepper and cola in a bowl.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Dip half the seitan in the batter, letting any excess drip off, and add to the skillet.

Fry, turning occasionally, for about 5 minutes.
  5. Transfer the seitan to paper towels to drain excess fat. Fry the remaining seitan in the same manner.
  6. Spread the seitan on the buns and pour the sauce over them. Sprinkle the buns with cheese. Place the buns on a baking sheet and bake until the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
  7. Serve sandwiches sprinkled with oregano.
