Granola bars are a great mid-day snack; they're filling and energizing. You can make them yourself and take them to work, school, or simply serve them with tea instead of cookies. This granola is made with rolled oats, crispy rice, wheat germ, chopped pecans, and almonds. Everything is coated in a mixture of brown sugar, molasses, and honey and baked in the oven. Then, the granola is cut into individual bars. Dip the bottom of each bar in melted chocolate, and they'll be just like store-bought.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 6 cups rolled oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 4 tbsp melted butter + extra for greasing the pan
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 cups honey
  • 1/4 cup apple juice
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 3 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups rice flakes (breakfast cereal)
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 0.5 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped almonds
  • 220 g milk chocolate, melted

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C.
  2. In a bowl, combine the rolled oats with canola oil, melted butter, and salt. Spread the mixture on 2 baking sheets and toast in the oven for 15-20 minutes, shaking the sheet twice to ensure the oats don't burn. Remove from the oven and set aside. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C.

  3. In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, honey, apple juice, and molasses. Heat the mixture slowly, stirring until combined. Add vanilla extract and remove from heat.
  4. Combine toasted oats, rice cereal, wheat germ, pecans, and almonds. Pour in the sugar mixture, stirring. Stir to coat; the mixture will be sticky.
  5. Place the mixture on a baking sheet (thoroughly greased with butter) and bake until golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Cut into pieces with a sharp knife and remove from the baking sheet. It's best to cut the bars while they're still hot.
  6. Dip the cooled granola bars directly into the melted chocolate, making sure they're plain on one side and coated on the other. Place them on parchment paper and refrigerate until completely set.
