Crunchy bars made with breakfast cereal and melted marshmallows are a popular homemade American dessert that originated in the mid-20th century. This unpretentious treat is loved for its ease of preparation, crunch, and flavor. This recipe suggests upgrading the crunchy bars by making them without cereal, using cookies, crackers, popcorn, potato chips, or nuts. The basic ingredients remain the same: marshmallows and butter. For the specified amount of ingredients, choose one type of crunchy topping.

  1. Spray an 8x8 inch baking pan with cooking spray and line with parchment paper, leaving at least a 2-inch overhang on both sides.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir constantly until melted, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in your toppings of choice until completely coated with the melted marshmallows.

  3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish, press it evenly, and let it set completely at room temperature, about 1 hour.
  4. Pull the paper tabs to lift the dessert out of the pan. Cut into sixteen 5cm square bars.
