Spend a cozy evening with loved ones over a pot of cheese fondue. This rich sauce of sharp cheddar, Gruyere, and white wine is infused with spicy notes of garlic, mustard, and nutmeg. If you don't have a special fondue pot, you can use a slow cooker, which will also keep the sauce warm for a long time. Traditionally, bread is a go-to appetizer for cheese fondue, but there are many other unexpected options that would be delicious with the cheese sauce. How about dipping dried figs, popcorn, or pineapple into the fondue? Below is a complete list of appetizers you probably wouldn't have thought of.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 340 g Gruyere, grated (about 4 cups)
  • 110 g grated sharp cheddar (about 1 cup)
  • 2 tbsp. flour
  • 1 clove garlic, cut in half
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • Various dipping snacks

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Mix the cheese and flour in a bowl. Rub the inside of the pan with a slice of garlic; discard.
  2. Combine the wine, lemon juice, and mustard in a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Add half the cheese mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until melted. Add the remaining cheese mixture and stir until smooth; season with nutmeg.

  3. Continue cooking, stirring, for another 2 minutes. Transfer the cheese sauce to a fondue pot or slow cooker to keep warm. Serve with any appetizers of your choice.
