A delicious, rich hot chocolate whose aroma alone lifts the spirits. Dates, milk, and a touch of vanilla extract make it just the right amount of sweet without the added refined sugar. Besides being a great fruity sweetener, dates also enhance the flavor of your chocolate drink, adding vitamins, beneficial micronutrients, and dietary fiber. All ingredients are simmered, and then the cocoa is blended. Be careful when handling the hot liquid, and don't completely close the blender lid. Garnish with whipped cream and cinnamon, if desired.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

  • 4 tbsp. low-fat milk
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, cocoa powder, dates, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until steaming. Continue cooking, but not allowing the mixture to boil vigorously, until the dates soften, for another 5 minutes.
  2. Let the hot chocolate cool for 5 minutes, then pour it into a blender and blend until smooth. You can strain the mixture to remove any small date chunks.

  3. Pour into mugs, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon, if using.
