Add a dash of peppermint extract to homemade hot chocolate and serve with a mint candy cane for an even more intense, refreshing flavor. For an even more festive touch, garnish with whipped cream.

  • 4 tbsp. low-fat milk (2%)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder
  • 110 g dark chocolate (cocoa content 57%), finely chopped
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8–1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Whipped cream and peppermint candies for serving
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder, chocolate and vanilla in a medium saucepan.
  • Step 2
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, the chocolate melts, and the mixture is hot and steaming. Add peppermint extract to taste. Pour the hot chocolate into 4 mugs and serve, garnished with whipped cream and a peppermint candy cane.
