Although gyros is considered a Greek dish, a few traditional Italian ingredients won't ruin it, but rather infuse it with a new and interesting flavor. Rub sweet Italian sausage with cumin and oregano, fry until nicely browned, and serve on flatbread with lettuce, tomatoes, and a spicy yogurt sauce. Thanks to the sausages, preparation won't take much time.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 350 g raw sweet Italian sausages (about 4 pcs.)
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tomatoes, cut into pieces
  • 4 medium romaine lettuce leaves, chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 0.5 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 0.5 tsp harissa
  • 4 round flatbreads, 15 cm in diameter, such as pitas without pockets

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Heat a cast iron grill pan or grill surface over medium-high heat.
  2. Slice the sausages lengthwise and open them like a book. Remove the rind and press the sausages flat, about 0.5 cm thick. Combine the cumin and oregano in a small bowl. Rub the cut sides of the sausages with the spice mixture. Brush a hot skillet with oil and add the sausages, seasoned side down. Cook on each side until browned and cooked through, 3-4 minutes per side.

  3. In a medium bowl, combine the tomatoes and their juices with the lettuce leaves. In another bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, harissa, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt until smooth.
  4. Fry each flatbread in a dry frying pan for about 30 seconds on each side. Spread a little yogurt sauce on the flatbreads and top with the tomato-lettuce salad and sausage. Serve with the remaining sauce.
