Sweet potatoes are a good source of nutrients. They're rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and potassium, to name just a few of their benefits. Steaming helps preserve most of the vitamins, and you don't need to add fat like you would with frying or baking. Plus, steaming sweet potatoes cooks much faster than baking them in the oven. You can serve steamed sweet potatoes with any of the suggested toppings or use them in salads and other side dishes.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Place a steamer basket or colander in a large saucepan. Add water until it comes 2.5 cm (1 inch) up the bottom of the steamer basket. Place the sweet potatoes in the steamer basket and bring the water to a boil. Once the water boils, cover the pot, reduce the heat to medium, and simmer until the potatoes are easily pierced with a knife, about 30 minutes.
- Remove the sweet potatoes from the steamer using tongs and let them rest for 5 minutes. Cut them in half lengthwise and serve as is or with your desired topping.
Note
Be sure to use whole potatoes of similar size so they cook at the same time. If desired, you can peel and cut the sweet potatoes into large pieces before steaming to reduce cooking time. Checking for doneness is the same as when boiling whole potatoes.
