Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 1.5-quart baking dish with butter (or spray with cooking spray).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Stir in the herbs, meat, bread, and 1/2 cup grated cheese. Place in the prepared baking dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.

  3. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake until the strata has puffed up. It should be golden brown around the edges and set in the center, about 15 more minutes.
  4. Let cool for 10 minutes and serve.

    Cooking for breakfast

You can bake the casserole immediately or assemble it the night before and refrigerate it, then bake it the next morning. After removing the pan from the refrigerator, let the casserole rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, then bake.
