For this casserole, potatoes are sliced ​​very thinly into round slices and layered in a baking dish, layered with white sauce, slices of baked ham, caramelized onions, and grated cheddar. Layers are layered in this manner, with the cheese being the final layer. While baking, the potatoes soak in the creamy sauce, becoming soft and flavorful, and the entire casserole is coated with a wonderful cheesy crust. The casserole is both festive and delicious.


Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tbsp. flour
  • 1.5 cups of milk
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 340 g of baked ham slices, 0.5 cm thick.
  • 2 cups grated cheddar
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Preheat oven to 175°C. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Step 2
  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in the milk. Return to the heat and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. When the sauce has thickened, remove from the heat, season with salt and pepper, and set aside.

  • In a frying pan, fry the onion in melted butter until golden brown. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Spread 1/3 of the white sauce on the bottom of a baking dish and top with half the potatoes. Then layer with half the onion, ham, and cheese, and another third of the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Continue layering ingredients, finishing with the remaining cheese. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
