"Growing up in Brooklyn," recalls recipe author Vivian Chan. "Many of my friends had working parents who would give them lunch money so they could buy takeout from Chinese restaurants. I loved their chicken wings, fried plantains, and chicken with broccoli, but my mom wasn't a fan of that kind of food. So she decided to make the best Chinese food at home. That's how this simple broccoli dish was born, and I loved it so much that I never ordered chicken with broccoli at the local restaurant again."

- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil over medium heat. Cut the broccoli into florets, trim the stems, and cut into 4-cm (1.5-inch) pieces. Add the broccoli to the pan and cook until crisp-tender, about 1.5 minutes. Drain in a colander.
- In a large nonstick skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When the oil begins to shimmer, add the garlic, ginger, and jalapeño and cook until the garlic is golden and fragrant, about 45 seconds. Add the broccoli, oyster sauce, vinegar, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and toss to coat.
