Young green beans, with their neutral flavor, make a great base for an Asian-inspired side dish. Simmer them in soy sauce with ginger, red pepper, rice vinegar, and brown sugar until the sauce turns into a sticky, sweet-salty glaze, and serve with rice or fried chicken.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 700 g green beans, ends removed
  • 2.5 cm ginger root, peeled and cut into thin strips
  • 1 tbsp. l. rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp. dark sesame oil

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sugar, red pepper flakes, and 2 tablespoons of water until the sugar dissolves. Combine the green beans with the sugar-soy mixture in a large skillet and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Cover and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, for 7 to 9 minutes, until the beans are crisp-tender.

  3. Remove the lid and add the ginger and vinegar. Continue cooking, stirring, until the sauce thickens and coats the beans and the beans are tender, another 5-7 minutes.
  4. Drizzle with sesame oil and toss well. Serve the beans warm.
