A quick Asian-inspired side dish of green beans pairs well with both pork and fried chicken. Blanch the green beans in boiling water, then simmer them in a spiced soy sauce. Cornstarch helps thicken the spicy soy glaze, while sesame seeds add crunch and a nutty flavor.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 450 g green beans, ends trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. dark sesame oil
  • 0.5 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp peanut or vegetable oil
  • 3 medium shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tsp chopped peeled ginger root
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tsp. rice vinegar

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the beans and cook until crisp-tender, 6-8 minutes. Drain, rinse the beans under cold water, and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, red pepper flakes and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl.

  3. Heat the peanut oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shallot, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds and cook, stirring occasionally, until the shallot is golden and soft, about 3 minutes. Add the green beans and sauce and cook, stirring, until the soy mixture thickens and coats the beans, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the vinegar.
