Unlike traditional baked beans, this side dish is made in a skillet with quick ingredients, but it's just as delicious and filling. It takes less than half an hour to prepare, as it uses canned white beans. They're simmered in a light tomato sauce with sautéed onions, molasses, smoked ham, mustard, and a splash of apple cider vinegar, infusing them with a whole host of flavors. Serve with roasted meat or poultry, and are a great addition to a barbecue.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 x 425g cans white beans, rinsed
  • 1 can (425 g) of canned crushed tomatoes
  • 340 g smoked ham, cut into 0.5 cm cubes.
  • 2 tsp rapeseed oil (canola)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 0.5 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper

We recommend

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the ham and garlic and cook for another 3 minutes.
  2. Add white beans, pureed tomatoes, water, molasses, mustard, vinegar, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Cover and simmer until about half the liquid is absorbed, 15 minutes.
