Viognier

Photo of Viognier

Viognier is a wine with a very rich history, made from the grape variety of the same name. It was originally produced only in the tiny village of Château-Grillet in the Northern Rhône region of France. The famous Condrieu wine, world-renowned for its rich aroma and flavor, is also made there.

Viognier grapes were then grown on plantations in the south of France, although not all wines produced from this variety had a rich aroma. In 1979, Viognier was transported to Australia and began to be made into wine at one of the oldest wineries in the city of Yalumba.

Viognier plays a major role in the production of Syrah, or Shiraz. New generation winemakers have discovered a new type of wine: Rhône Shiraz. In its production, 5 to 10% Viognier is added to impart a rich aroma. This also imparts a distinct flavor and color.

Main characteristics of Viognier wines:

Color: transparent or pale golden.

Extractivity, or density: medium to high (full-bodied).

Taste: There may be heady aromas of peaches and apricots, and the full-bodied wine has a relatively high alcohol content.

For making wines Viognier grapes are most often blended with red grape varieties such as Syrah/Shiraz.

Supplier countries: France, Austria, Spain, Argentina, Chile, USA (California), South Africa.

For storage or consumption? For consumption: Enjoy while the wine is full of fresh aromas.

Price range: from $5.99 to $35 per bottle.

White wines made from Viognier grapes are recommended to be served with fish dishes with sauce, white poultry or soft cheeses.
