Essential items for a budding cook

If you're just learning how to cook, start by using the right tools. They'll not only make learning easier, but they'll also help you do everything better, easier, and faster, and your dishes will turn out tastier and more appealing.

1. A wide and hard metal spatula. It is used for:
– removing fried eggs or omelettes from the frying pan;
– placing ingredients on hamburgers;
– delicate transfer of food from one pan to another;
- slices of quiche or lasagna;
- scraping burnt food from a frying pan or baking sheet.

2. Fine sieve. It will be useful for:
– straining tea;
– washing vegetables or greens;
– rinsing the cereal, which is impossible to do using a colander;
– skimming fat from the surface of chicken soup;
– sifting flour or sugar.

3. Tongs. This is also an indispensable item in the kitchen. They are needed for:
– removing a hot pan from the oven when you cannot use an oven mitt;
– removing dishes from the steamer;
– stirring vegetables while stewing;
– turning vegetables in a salad or meat when frying;

4. Rubber spatula. There's nothing better for removing food from plastic containers. It can also be used for:
– spreading icing on the cake;
– scraping food from the sides of the processor or blender bowl;
– stirring hot food;
– adding ingredients to the dough.

5. Long wooden spoon. Its length should be at least 30 cm. Unlike a metal one, it won't overheat when stirring hot food. It can also be used for:
– removing baked vegetables from the oven;
– stirring sauces in tall bottles;
– stirring fried vegetables in a frying pan;
– stirring acidic foods such as ketchup, which is not recommended to be stirred with metal spoons to avoid changing the taste of the sauce.
