For a themed Christmas or New Year's table decoration, you can bake candy cane cookies with the same vibrant peppermint flavor. They're much easier to make than you might think. To make them, you'll need a dry sugar cookie mix. Mix it into a dough with butter and cream cheese, then divide the dough in half. Color one half with red food coloring, and add peppermint extract to the other. You can also get the kids involved in the creative part by rolling the dough into ropes and twisting them into canes. It'll be fun and exciting!


Ingredients:

  • 1 package dry sugar cookie mix
  • 55 g butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup softened cream cheese
  • 0.5 cup flour + extra for work
  • Red food coloring
  • 1.5 tsp peppermint extract
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

  • Preheat oven to 160°C.

  • In a bowl, combine the dry sugar cookie mix, melted butter, egg, cream cheese, and flour; knead into a dough. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions and place them in 2 separate bowls. Gradually add red food coloring to 1 bowl of dough, mixing until the desired shade of red is achieved. Add peppermint extract to the second bowl of uncolored dough and knead. On a floured work surface, form each dough ball into balls, then roll each ball into a rope 1/4 inch wide and 6 inches long. For each cookie, carefully twist the red and white ropes of dough together to form a Christmas cane. Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake on the top shelf of the oven for 10-12 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and cool before serving.
