With this recipe, your brown rice will always be perfectly and evenly cooked. The main rule: don't peek under the lid. Once the rice is cooked, let it steam for a few more minutes under the lid, and you'll be amazed at the results. Once you've mastered the basic recipe, you can make the side dish more complex, for example, by adding dried fruits or vegetables. Several delicious ideas are provided at the end of the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp. short grain brown rice
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth, store-bought or homemade
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 strip of lemon or orange zest, 5 cm long.
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer, cover, and cook the rice for 50 minutes. Do not open the lid, or the rice will cook unevenly.
  • Step 2
  • Remove the pan from the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 10 minutes (don't peek into the pan!). Fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
  • Step 3
  • Rice with dried fruits:
    Add a handful of raisins or dried apricots to the rice along with the water.

    Rice with vegetables:
    While the rice is cooling, combine a 280g bag of frozen vegetables in a saucepan with 2 tablespoons of water and a strip of orange zest. Steam the vegetables over medium-high heat until warmed through, 3-5 minutes. Add to the hot rice immediately after fluffing with a fork.
