How to set the table for a holiday

Festive table setting involves the proper arrangement of dishes and cutlery, as well as table decoration. It's a unique art form and an expression of the taste of the person setting the table. Setting the table for a significant occasion can require significant expenditure on decorations. The aesthetic appeal and design of the table depends on the tablecloth, dishes, cutlery, decorative arrangements, and the appearance of the dishes. Furthermore, the table should harmonize with the room's decor. A good overall impression can be created with beautiful salads, appetizers, and other dishes. To quickly and correctly arrange cutlery, follow these simple guidelines.
The table must be covered with an ironed and clean tablecloth. It should hang evenly across all sides of the table. It's sufficient to leave no more than 30 cm at each edge. Next, place the plates on the table. They should be washed, dried, and polished with a towel or napkin beforehand.
Appetizer plates are placed opposite each place setting, 2 cm from the edge of the table. The bread or pastry plate is placed to the left of the appetizer plate. The center of these two plates should line up. Table setting for a festive occasion may include the placement of dinner plates. In this case, the far edges of the dinner plate and the pastry plate should line up. A deep plate is required for the main course. Dessert plates are served after the main course. A platter of sliced fruit is placed in the center of the table.
Laying out the cutlery
The knife and fork should be placed close to the main course, as they are intended for it. The knife is placed with the tip facing the plate. The tip of the fork should be facing up. If a spoon is used, it is placed next to the fork with the concave side facing up. A dessert spoon (with the handle facing right) is placed behind the plate. If wine is to be served, a wine glass should be placed behind the knife (to the right). If several different drinks are to be served, glasses for them should be placed at the same time. The water glass should be placed closest to the plate, and the wine glass should be placed to the left of it.
If there are several dishes, the cutlery is placed as follows:
The dinner knife should be placed next to the plate, with the fish knife to the right. The appetizer knife is placed further back than the other knives relative to the dinner knife. If butter is served with bread, a small knife is placed next to it. It should be placed on a pastry plate, which is to the left of the fork. Between the fish knife and the appetizer knife is a soup spoon. Forks are placed to the left of the plate (in the same order as the knives). Leave about 1 cm between cutlery, and 2 cm from the handles of the cutlery to the edge of the table.
How to arrange drinkware
Each drink requires its own wine glass or flute. For fruit drink (mors) or kvass, place a mug on the table (with the handle turned to the right). No more than three glasses should be placed in a row. If there are many, they should be arranged in two rows. For red wine, it's best to serve convex glasses, as this is where the flavor bouquet unfolds. White wine can be served in smaller glasses. These require frequent refills, allowing guests to enjoy a fresh, cool wine. Champagne requires tall glasses, as they produce a particularly rich foam without flattening too quickly.
Napkins are an essential attribute of a festive table.
When setting the table, don't forget about linen napkins. They can be folded in a variety of ways. However, avoid complex shapes, as guests shouldn't have difficulty unfolding them. Linen napkins are used for practical purposes – they are used to wipe lips and hands, and also to cover clothing around the knees. If appetizer plates aren't available, linen napkins folded in quarters are used in their place. For a festive lunch or dinner, napkins can be folded into cones.
