Caramelized Onion Dip

How to Make Caramelized Onion Dip
Time: 1 hour 40 min.
Complexity: easily
Servings: 8

Everyone will love this homemade caramelized onion dip! And the best thing is that you can make it a few days in advance and refrigerate it until guests arrive. The flavor will only improve and become richer. The dip is made with sour cream, mayonnaise, herbs, and sweet-spicy caramelized onions and thyme. Simply mix everything together, let it sit, and serve, sprinkled with green onions, with potato chips for dipping. A perfect treat for house parties or a night watching the game.

Ingredients:

  • 2 onions, diced
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, coarsely chopped
  • 1 and 1/4 cups sour cream
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives, for serving
  • Potato chips, for serving
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

We recommend

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and thyme and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is very soft and browned, about 20 minutes, reducing the heat to medium-low if the onion is browning too quickly. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  • Step 2
  • Meanwhile, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl, season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the onion mixture and stir until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.
  • Step 3
  • Note

The dip can be made up to 3 days in advance and refrigerated in an airtight container. When ready to serve, sprinkle the dip with chives and serve with potato chips.
