How to Make - Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich with Melting Fontina and Fried Red Onions
Kitchen:American,
Time: 30 min.
Complexity: easily
Servings: 4 - 8

A Philadelphia cheesesteak, or Philly cheesesteak for short, is a large sandwich with a juicy steak topped with melting cheese. To grill the steak for the sandwich, it must be cut into very thin slices. This is easiest done with a very sharp knife when the meat is slightly frozen. Pan-fry the beef, place it on buns, top with fried red onions, and top with microwave-melted fontina cheese. Quick, delicious, and very satisfying.

  • Heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet over high heat. Fry the onion rings, stirring constantly, until softened and just beginning to darken, about 7 minutes. Season the onions with salt.
  • Step 2

  • Step 3
  • Remove the onion from the pan. Season the steak slices with salt and pepper, then fry them in the same pan, a few at a time, until cooked through, about 45 seconds per side. Repeat with the remaining steak, adding more vegetable oil if necessary.
  • Step 4
  • Meanwhile, microwave the cheese cubes on low power for a few minutes until the cheese is completely melted.
  • Step 5
  • Slice each bun in half lengthwise. Fill with a generous portion of steak slices, top with melted cheese and fried onions.
