Dagwood sandwiches are named after the American comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead, who had a particular passion for these enormous sandwiches.

The sandwich may look comical, but it's a great way to surprise guests not only with its appearance but also with its delicious taste. Plus, even vegetarians will appreciate it.


Ingredients:


Sandwich
  • 24 slices of bread (2 loaves), such as rye, soda bread with olives or sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet relish
  • 1 head romaine lettuce, separated into leaves
  • Grilled mushrooms and eggplant, recipe follows

Pickled vegetables
  • Pickled tomatoes, zucchini, radishes and pickled onions, recipe included
  • 350 g Havarti cheese with dill, cut into slices
  • Olives, for garnish
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup and chopped relish In a small bowl, combine 24 slices of bread and lightly brush one side of each with the mixture. Top 4 slices with romaine lettuce and barbecue mushrooms.

    Place the remaining slices of bread on top, dry side down. Then top each with cheese, barbecued eggplant, and a third slice, mayonnaise-side down.

  • Place lettuce leaves, cheese and on 4 more slices of bread pickled tomatoes.

    Top each one with another slice of bread, buttered side up, then add pickled onions, zucchini, and radish. Top with the remaining 4 slices, mayonnaise-side down. Place the eggplant sandwich on top of the zucchini sandwich to create a "Dagwood."

  • Secure with a long skewer and garnish with an olive. Arrange the Dagwood on a platter. When serving, divide into individual club sandwiches.

    Recipe Hot eggplant sandwich.

    Grilled eggplantCombine 1/2 cup olive oil, 3 finely chopped garlic cloves, and 1 teaspoon chopped thyme. Thinly slice 1 eggplant. Brush with garlic oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill until charred, about 3 minutes per side.

    Grilled mushroomsMix 1/2 cup olive oil with 3 crushed garlic cloves. Scrape the spores from under the caps of 8 button mushrooms, brush the mushrooms with garlic oil, and season with salt and pepper. Grill for about 4 minutes per side.

  • Pickled radishes


    Thinly slice 1 bunch of radishes. Mix with the juice of 1 lemon, season with salt and pepper. Let marinate for about 20 minutes.

    Pickled onions


    Bring 1 1/2 cups red wine vinegar to a boil with 6 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds, 1 bay leaf, a pinch of crushed dried red pepper flakes, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add 2 sliced ​​red onions and simmer for 1 minute. Let cool.

    Marinated zucchini


    Slice 2 zucchinis lengthwise into thin slices. Arrange on a serving platter, sprinkle with the zest and juice of 1 lemon, and season with salt and pepper. Let marinate for about 20 minutes.

    Pickled tomatoes


    Thinly slice 2 beefsteak tomatoes, season with 1 teaspoon salt and pepper to taste. Let marinate for about 20 minutes.
