Pizza "Margherita" in a waffle iron

How to Make Margherita Pizza in a Waffle Iron
Kitchen:Italian,
Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 2 waffles

An electric waffle iron can be a worthy substitute for an oven when making pizza. First, bake the pizza crust in the waffle iron, then arrange all the ingredients on it and toast the topping without closing the lid tightly, just like under the grill element of an oven. This waffle pizza is even more delicious, as its edges will be crispier, and the deep wells will catch all the delicious sauce and melted cheese. To start, make a simple Margherita pizza with tomatoes and cheese. Once you've mastered toasting the topping, you can confidently add any toppings you like.

Ingredients:

  • 1 serving weighing 240 g. yeast-free pie dough, room temperature, cut in half
  • 1/3 cup tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp olive oil + extra for greasing the dough
  • A large pinch of coarse salt
  • 2-3 fresh basil leaves, torn + extra for serving
  • Half a small clove of garlic, very thinly sliced
  • Flour for rolling out
  • 0.5 tbsp. grated mozzarella
  • Parmesan for sprinkling
  • Special equipment: waffle iron (preferably large)
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

We recommend

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Combine tomato puree, 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, basil, and garlic. Let sit at room temperature for about 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Step 2
  • Preheat your waffle iron to medium-high heat. Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out half the dough into a 6-inch (15 cm) circle (or as large as your waffle iron will fit). Brush one side with olive oil and place it, greased side down, on the waffle iron, then brush the other side with olive oil.
  • Step 3
  • Close the waffle iron (do not press down) and cook the waffles until golden brown and cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes. Cook the remaining batter in the same manner.
  • Step 4
  • Meanwhile, microwave the tomato sauce until hot. Spread half the sauce on each waffle and top with half the mozzarella. Place one pizza back on the waffle iron and hold the top of the waffle iron over the cheese until melted, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Step 5
  • Place the pizza on a serving platter, sprinkle with basil, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Repeat with the second pizza. Using a large knife or pizza cutter, cut the pizza into slices and serve.
