Freezing rice and prepared dishes made from it

Not everyone can afford to cook every day. Those who go to work and spend their days there practically never have this opportunity. However, eating home-cooked meals is much healthier and more budget-friendly than dining out. Freezing ready-made meals for future use is a great time saver. This method is suitable not only for the busy but also for the lazy. You can freeze not only vegetables and meat, but also rice. Rice keeps well in the freezer for up to a month. The only secret is to defrost and cook it properly. Below are several quick and easy ways to freeze rice and ready-made dishes.

1. Rice in airtight containers

– Place freshly cooked rice in a container, do not close the lid yet.
– When the product has cooled to room temperature, close the lid.
– Glue or tie a piece of paper with the freezing date on it to the container.

Warming up:

Open the container lid, add a little water to the rice, and microwave. Heat the rice for a couple of minutes, then stir well.

2. Rice under plastic wrap

– Place the required amount of rice in a bowl.
– Cover the top of the bowl with plastic wrap, leaving enough plastic wrap over the sides.
– Place a plate or cutting board on top of the bowl.
– Quickly turn the bowl over with the plate or board so that the bowl is on top.
– Carefully lift the bowl and cover the rice with plastic wrap around the edges.
– Remove any air from under the film and shape the rice into a square or rectangular shape. This will make it easier to store in the freezer.
– Place individual rice packets in an airtight bag or plastic container and seal or tie tightly.
– Write the date the rice was packaged on the bag or container.

Warming up:

When you're ready to cook rice, simply take the bag of rice out of the freezer. Remove the plastic wrap and place the rice in a microwave-safe bowl. Add a little water and microwave for a couple of minutes, until the rice is soft and fragrant.

3. Brown rice

– Rinse the cooked rice under the tap, drain the water.
– While the rice is still hot, place it on a sheet of paper and spread it evenly.
– Cut the sheet of paper with rice into smaller portions.
Cool the rice to room temperature and place each portion in a separate bag. Remove excess air from the bags and seal them.
– Write the freezing date on the bags.
– Put the bags in the freezer.

Warming up:

Take the rice out of the bag, remove the paper, place it in a bowl, add a little water and microwave for a couple of minutes.

4. Rice pudding

– Prepare rice pudding, drain excess water.
– Place the pudding in a freezer-safe container and let it cool to room temperature.
– It is better to place the pudding in several small containers rather than in one large one – this way it will be easier to take it out and reheat it in the required quantities, without heating the rest of the pudding, since this dish should not be defrosted unnecessarily.
– Let the pudding cool. Close the container with a lid and mark the freezing date.
– Rice pudding will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months, but it is recommended to consume it as soon as possible.

Warming up:

Remove the pudding from the container and place it in a saucepan. Pour a couple of tablespoons of milk into the saucepan and heat slowly on the stove. Remember to stir the mixture to prevent it from burning or sticking to the bottom of the pan.

5. Rice dishes for babies

– Cool the dish to room temperature and cut it into cubes.
– Place the dish in bags and squeeze out excess air.
– Place the bags in the freezer.

Remember: Do not freeze and then reheat any baby food that contains milk or dairy products.

Warming up:

Reheat baby food in small portions. Before using, defrost the food in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, or better yet, overnight. You can reheat in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove. In either case, remember to stir the food to prevent burning. Allow the food to cool sufficiently before feeding.

So, as you can see, freezing rice and rice-based dishes is quite easy. The main thing to remember is to remove all air or water from bags or containers before placing them in the freezer; otherwise, the texture, aroma, and flavor of the rice may be adversely affected. Don't forget to add a little water to the rice before reheating. This will make it more moist and juicy.
