French cuisine is renowned not only for its culinary delights but also for the simple yet popular hot sandwich, the croque-monsieur, which translates as "Monsieur Crunch." The sandwich is made with two toasted slices of bread, sandwiched between Gruyère cheese and slices of ham. The top of the sandwich is topped with cheese sauce, and it's baked in the oven until the cheese melts and dribbles deliciously down the sides of the crispy sandwich. The croque-monsieur can be prepared as a hearty snack, or cut into bite-sized pieces and served as an appetizer with wine.


Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 2 cups of hot milk
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 0.5 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 340 gr. grated gruyere (5 tbsp.)
  • 0.5 tbsp. freshly grated parmesan
  • 16 slices white sandwich bread, crusts trimmed
  • Dijon mustard
  • 220 g baked country ham, sliced ​​(not too thin)
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Preheat oven to 200°C.
  • Step 2
  • Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat and add all the flour, stirring with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes. Gradually pour in the hot milk and cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper, and add the nutmeg, 1/2 cup of grated Gruyere, and Parmesan.

  • To toast the bread, place the slices on 2 baking sheets and bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Turn each slice over and bake for another 2 minutes, until golden brown.

  • Lightly brush half of the toasted slices with mustard, top with a slice of ham, and sprinkle with half of the remaining Gruyere. Top with another slice of toasted bread. Spread the tops with cheese sauce, sprinkle with the remaining Gruyere, and bake the sandwiches for 5 minutes. Turn the oven to broil and broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the topping is bubbly and lightly browned. Serve the sandwiches hot.
