How to Make California Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 3 and 1/3 cups rice
  • 5 and 1/3 tbsp vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons of sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of salt
  • 10 sheets of seaweed, cut in half
  • 225 g crab sticks, cut into long thin strips
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 avocado, peeled, pitted and cut into long thin slices
  • Sesame seeds
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Strain in a colander and let sit for 30 minutes. Place the rice in a saucepan or rice cooker and add 4 cups of water (or according to your rice cooker instructions). Bring the water to a boil.

    Reduce heat to low and cover with a lid. Cook the rice for 15 minutes. Remove the lid, place a damp towel over the rice, and let it cool for 10 minutes.

  • You can find sushi vinegar in the grocery section of the store, or you can easily make your own by mixing vinegar, sugar, and salt in a saucepan and heating the mixture over low heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. If you prefer a sweeter vinegar, simply add more sugar.

    Pour the sushi vinegar over the cooked rice and stir gently. You can do this in a wooden bowl for making sushi rice or in your rice cooker after turning it off. Simply pour in the vinegar, stir gently, and let it sit until the rice cools to room temperature. Leave the lid open.
  • Step 3
  • Cover the makisu (sushi mat) with plastic wrap. Place half a sheet of seaweed on the mat.

    Place a handful of rice on the seaweed, spread it evenly, and carefully flip it over. In a small bowl, mix the crab sticks with mayonnaise. Place a small amount of this mixture across the center of the seaweed, forming a narrow strip.

    Add some cucumber and avocado along the center. Using a mat and plastic wrap, roll the rice and seaweed around the filling and press lightly at the joint. Remove the mat and plastic wrap and sprinkle the roll with sesame seeds.

    Cut the roll into small pieces. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
