Jamaican Meat Pies "Soccer Balls"

How to Make Jamaican Meatballs
Kitchen:Caribbean,
Time: 2 hours.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 16 pies

If you're preparing snacks for a game, these football-shaped pastries are perfect: they're easy to make with store-bought puff pastry, look atmospheric, and their savory flavor pairs perfectly with beer. Fill them with ground beef and Jamaican chili peppers and, following the step-by-step recipe, form the pastries into football shapes. You can even use the dough scraps to decorate the balls. Serve them hot with any dipping sauce, such as ranch, barbecue sauce, or chutney.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Preheat oven to 200°C. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Step 2
  • Combine the thyme, green onion, garlic, chilli and bell pepper in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped (be careful not to create a smooth paste).
  • Step 3
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring, until darkened, about 2 minutes. Add the pepper mixture, curry powder, and allspice and cook, stirring, until the beef is browned and the filling is fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  • Step 4
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vegetable oil. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper, and let the filling cool completely. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  • Step 5
  • Roll out each sheet of puff pastry to 0.3 cm thick. Using a 10 cm oval cookie cutter, cut 8 ovals from each sheet of pastry; set the scraps aside.
  • Step 6
  • Place 1 tablespoon of beef filling in the center of each half of the dough oval and brush the edges with egg wash. Top each half with an empty dough oval and crimp the edges with a fork to seal. Transfer the patties to the prepared baking sheets.
  • Step 7
  • From the scraps of dough, cut 16 strips measuring 5 x 0.3 cm and 48 strips measuring 2.5 x 0.3 cm. Place the long strips along the center of each pie, then place 3 short strips across the long strips to form the laces of the soccer ball. Carefully, to avoid dislodging the laces, brush the tops of the pie with the egg wash.
  • Step 8
  • Bake until golden brown, 25-30 minutes. Serve with barbecue sauce, chutney, or ranch dressing for dipping.
