The original "Ants on a Log" children's snack consisted of a celery stalk coated in peanut butter with ants (raisins) crawling on it. It was a unique way to get kids to eat healthy celery, but over time, the snack was transformed, adding other spreads and other "ants," like in this recipe. Sunny Anderson coated the celery stalks in ranch dressing and topped them with dried cranberries and walnuts along with the raisins.

Ingredients:

  • 450 g whipped cream cheese
  • 3 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 sachet Hidden Valley ranch dressing mixes
  • 6 celery stalks, cut into 7cm pieces.
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup golden raisins
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Prepare the spreadPlace the cream cheese, sour cream, and ranch dressing mixture in a bowl. Stir with a silicone spatula until evenly distributed.
  • Step 2
  • Roast the walnutsPlace the walnuts in a frying pan and toast over medium heat, stirring, until warmed through and fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Step 3
  • AssemblyIn a shallow bowl, combine walnuts, raisins, and cranberries. Fill the hollow side of each celery stick with cream cheese spread.
  • Step 4
  • Press each "log," cheese-side down, into the nut and dried fruit mixture to adhere. Serve at room temperature.
