To make vanilla extract at home, you'll need just a few vanilla beans and a little alcohol. Of course, you'll need patience—it takes time for the wonderful vanilla aroma to fully develop—but the results are worth it. Vanilla extract will undoubtedly enhance any homemade baked goods or dessert.


Ingredients:

  • 3 vanilla pods
  • 250-350 ml of cognac or vodka
  • Special devices: a bottle with a tight-fitting lid with a capacity of 300–360 ml.
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Split the vanilla beans in half lengthwise, without cutting them completely. Place the beans in a 300–360 ml bottle and pour in the alcohol. Close the lid and shake vigorously. Let sit at room temperature for 4 weeks to allow the flavor and aroma to fully develop, shaking the bottle once a week. Store the extract in a dark place at room temperature for up to 6 months.
