Homemade mulled wine

This aromatic, warming mulled wine is made with apple cider, orange juice, and red wine. Honey is added for sweetness. For flavor, a traditional blend of winter spices is used: cinnamon, anise, cloves, and orange zest, whose bright citrus note perfectly complements the rich, sweet aroma of mulled wine. All the spices in this recipe are perfectly balanced, and the wine infused with them is sure to lift your spirits.


Ingredients:

  • 4 cups apple cider
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) of red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise (star anise)
  • 4 oranges, peeled, for serving
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

    Step 1
  • In a large saucepan, combine the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, cloves, and anise. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into mugs and garnish each serving with orange peel.
