Coffee in a French press

How to Make Coffee in a French Press
Menu:Breakfast,
Time: 10 min.
Complexity: easily
Servings: 2

Once you master the French press, it will always delight you with consistently delicious coffee. Plus, this device will make your morning coffee ritual much more enjoyable. To brew the perfect cup of coffee, it's important to remember that the grind shouldn't be too fine, otherwise the coffee will be bitter and cloudy. If you don't have a grinder, ask the store to grind the coffee, and be sure to mention that you need a French press grind. Water temperature is also important: boiling water will give a burnt taste. The brewing time depends on your personal preferences. You'll need to experiment a few times to find the optimal brewing time.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coffee beans*
  • Milk or sweetener of your choice, optional
  • Special equipment: French press for 4-8 cups, coffee grinder
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Bring a kettle of water to a boil. Pour hot water into a 4-8 cup French press to warm it while you grind the coffee. Add 2 cups of water to the kettle and bring it back to a boil.
  • Step 2
  • Grind the beans in a coffee grinder until they are coarsely ground; the ground coffee should resemble coarse sugar or sand. Grinding too finely will result in a cloudy, oily sheen, and a bitter taste.
  • Step 3
  • Once the kettle boils, remove it from the heat and let it sit for 30 seconds to bring the water to the ideal temperature for a French press. If it's too hot, the coffee may develop a burnt taste.
  • Step 4
  • Empty the hot water from the French press. Place the measured ground coffee in the bottom. Pour in 1 cup of hot water, cover (but do not lower the plunger), and let steep for 1 minute.

    Note

If you don't have a coffee grinder, you can get your beans ground at a coffee shop. Ask for a grinder for a French press.
  • Step 5
  • After 1 minute, gently stir with the handle of a wooden spoon to break up the coffee layer on the surface. Pour in the remaining 1 cup of hot water. Cover with the lid (do not lower the plunger) and let steep for another 3-4 minutes, depending on how strong you like your coffee. Everyone's taste is different, so experiment to find your ideal brewing time.
  • Step 6
  • Slowly press the plunger down to force the coffee grounds into the bottom of the French press. If it's very difficult to press, your coffee is likely too finely ground. If the plunger slides down without resistance, your coffee is likely too coarsely ground. The plunger should move with slight resistance.
  • Step 7
  • Serve coffee immediately with milk and sweetener, if using.

    Note

If you've brewed coffee just for yourself and want to have another cup later, it's best to pour it into a thermos or pitcher. Leaving the coffee in the French press will continue to steep and may become too strong or bitter. For one French press, you'll need a slightly heaping 1/4 cup of ground coffee.
