Cold brew: Coffee that is cold brewed

How to Make Cold Brew: Cold Brewed Coffee
Menu:Breakfast,
Time: 18 hours 5 minutes
Complexity: easily
Servings: 2

This recipe makes only two servings of cold brew coffee. So, if you're making it for the first time, this amount is enough to test the drink and figure out how strong you want the coffee and how long you want to steep it. Once you've found the right brewing time through trial and error, feel free to double the servings. The strained coffee concentrate can be stored tightly sealed in the refrigerator for up to a week. Add water, ice, desired sweeteners, cream, or milk, and enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup coffee beans*
  • 1.5 cups of cold water
  • Milk or sweetener of your choice, optional
  • Special equipment: coffee grinder, cheesecloth and kitchen string or a coffee filter, a half-liter Mason jar or other glass container
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

We recommend

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Grind the beans in a coffee grinder until coarsely ground; the ground coffee should resemble coarse sugar or sand.
  • Step 2
  • Cut a double piece of cheesecloth measuring 15 x 15 cm. Place the coffee grounds in the center of the cheesecloth and tie tightly with kitchen twine. Place the bag in a 0.5-liter jar or other glass container with a capacity of 2 tablespoons. Add cold water and seal tightly. If desired, you can pour the coffee grounds directly into the cold water and then strain through the cheesecloth.
  • Step 3
  • Refrigerate and let steep for at least 12 hours, but ideally 18-24 hours. Remove the coffee bag from the jar, squeeze to extract as much liquid as possible, and discard.
  • Step 4
  • To serve, mix equal parts cold brew coffee concentrate and cold water. Add milk and sweetener if desired.

    Note

You can brew 1/3 cup of ground coffee if the grind is very coarse. If you don't have cheesecloth, you can use a coffee filter and strain the coffee through it.

If you want to sweeten your coffee, make a batch of simple syrup and store it in the refrigerator. Mix equal parts water and sugar and heat over low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved, then cool and refrigerate.
