Whiskey sour

How to Make a Whiskey Sour
Kitchen:American,
Time: 5 min.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 1 cocktail

Although this cocktail's name translates as "whiskey sour," its flavor is much softer and more balanced. It's equal parts sweet and tart, thanks to simple syrup and lemon juice, making it arguably one of the most delicious cocktails ever invented. This centuries-old drink became popular throughout the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks in part to its simple formula. Bartenders have tweaked the recipe over the decades with various sweeteners, egg whites, and other additives, but true connoisseurs know that nothing beats the classics.

Ingredients:

  • 0.5 cups of sugar
  • 60 ml bourbon
  • 20 ml lemon juice + 1 lemon wedge, for decoration
  • 1 cocktail cherry, for garnish
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.

1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

We recommend

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Prepare sugar syrup:

Combine sugar and 0.5 cups of water in a saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Step 2
  • Combine bourbon, lemon juice, and 20 ml of simple syrup in a shaker with ice; shake well, then strain into a glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge and a cherry.
  • Step 3
  • Some bartenders add egg whites to their whiskey, giving the drink a velvety texture and a foamy topping.

Add 1 pasteurized egg white to the bourbon, lemon juice, and syrup in a shaker without ice and shake vigorously, then add ice and shake again to chill the drink; strain into a glass.
