Cheese dip with ham

How to Make Cheese Dip with Ham
Time: 1 hour.
Complexity: easily
Servings: 10 - 12

This hot and gooey cheese dip is a great treat for house parties. Its highlight is the salty chunks of ham stuffed into a cream cheese and sharp cheddar cheese spread. Trisha Yearwood recommends rendering some of the fat from the ham before adding it to the sauce. Top the dip with a crispy spiced pecan topping. To entertain guests, set out a large platter of the dip and arrange crackers, corn chips, celery sticks, and croutons around it for dipping and enjoying.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Preheat oven to 175°C.
  • Step 2
  • Place the ham slices on a microwave-safe plate lined with paper towels. Cover with a damp paper towel and microwave on low power until the ham is slightly crispy around the edges and the paper towels are saturated with fat, 2-3 minutes.
  • Step 3
  • Remove the ham from the microwave and discard the paper towels. Using two forks, shred the ham into bite-sized pieces. Place the ham in a large bowl.
  • Step 4
  • Add cream cheese, cheddar, sour cream, garlic powder, shallots, and 1 teaspoon black pepper to a bowl and stir to distribute evenly. Pour the ham and cheese mixture into a 9-inch pie dish.
  • Step 5
  • In a small bowl, combine the pecans, butter, and Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle the pecans over the cheese sauce.
  • Step 6
  • Bake the sauce until heated through and bubbly around the edges, 25-30 minutes. Serve warm with crackers, tortilla chips, and celery.

    Note

For this sauce, it's best to render some of the salty fat from the ham. This is usually done in the oven, baking at a low temperature and slowly for an hour! In this recipe, we took a shortcut and rendered the fat in the microwave!
