The best barbecue sauce

How to Make - The Best BBQ Sauce
Time: 30 min.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 1 l.

The sauce's flavor is reminiscent of store-bought Heinz sauce—a marinade and topping for meat. Although homemade barbecue sauce is made with store-bought ketchup and steak sauce, the flavor is distinctive and well-balanced, with moderate sweetness, tartness, and spicy notes. For a more potent experience, add a spoonful of liquid smoke. Since fresh onions are used in the preparation, it's recommended to strain the finished sauce through a sieve to ensure a smooth consistency. Serve with grilled meats and enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 tbsp. ketchup
  • 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 3 tbsp mustard
  • 0.5 tsp ground celery seeds
  • 1-2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

We recommend

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Heat vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until golden, 6-7 minutes. Stir in the ketchup, 1 cup water, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, mustard, celery seed, and 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the onion is soft, about 15 minutes.
  • Step 2
  • Stir in liquid smoke, if using. Strain the sauce, pressing down on the solid ingredients to extract as much liquid as possible.
